Bareback ride

I can't really believe it but I rode Garbo bareback today! I had ridden him round the track in my saddle and then was unsaddling and thought - what the heck! I was only going to walk around the wash bay and then I went out onto the track - so much fun!! Even did a little trot too. And didn't wobble all over the place.

I have not ridden bareback before apart from sitting on horses as a kid (just sitting) - this is a pretty old photo!! It was taken at my Mums farm in Silverdale one school holidays. Yes, I have no shoes and a skirt on! Let alone no helmet.

I thought it would be harder but it's great being able to feel the movement of the horse.

heehee... I know - I still can't really believe I did it to be honest. But I am HOOKED now. Thought about doing it again all day today. :-)

You should try it with Lizzie...

He is pretty chilled an happy these days which is fantabulous. And who would have thought I would be riding without a bit and saddle just a year after starting Parelli (not quite). If you had told me that 12 months ago I would have thought you were nuts.

And Cilla - I took a leaf from you book! When I was riding in saddle Garbo put his ears back at one point and didn't want to go away from the barn, I immediately went to phase 3 and he went SURE.. and walked on with his ears forward. I had not previously been brave enough to do that when he got shitty.

Well done, Vicki! I am so jealous! I can manage bareback only with the pad and someone at the horse's head so I'm SURE he/she won't take off. (I've fallen a couple of times and have yet to get my confidence back without stirrups on my feet!) But I agree, totally, it is wonderful to feel the horse moving under you. I love to stop and let them graze while I sit. Makes me feel close to them and just feeling them breathe is so lovely.

Anyway, wow and great job! :)

Hugs,
Jen

ps - I want to know more about the phase 3...can you tell me more specifics??

Hi Jen
Normally when Garbo decides he will get a bit nappy and pin his ears back I am too afraid to do more than phase 2 (squeeze) but today I went immediately to phase three - slapping myself with rope. In the old L2 pocket guides it says to slowly increase the intensity of the rope slapping on yourself - like in phases also - then to go to phase 4 by slapping the horse but with a phase one intensity to begin with.

Anyway - Garbo walked forward immediately when I started hitting myself with the rope - he knows what comes next.

Oh I see what you mean! Neat! I had no idea how to respond in the saddle if they started getting obstinate but that sounds perfect!

AND I didn't realize until I read this again that YOU HAD NEVER RIDDEN bareback before, just sat!!! So double wow!!! :)

Big kudos, Vicki! Great job!
