Garbo my Palomino is my main horse and I passed my Level 2 in April 2009 and I received my L3 in Pagosa after my Flex Track course in July 2012. So needless to say we're working on Level 4 now.
I also have a paint called Maraschino. He's newly started and doing fab. My first show in 10 years. I wasn't nervous which was surprising, I jumped in the shower and made myself a herbal coffee.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Less than a week earlier I'd emailed off an entry to the local Ribbon Day with Maraschino, and just the mere act of entering gave me butterflies.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
Here's why: it had been 10 years since my last ribbon day. That particular show was with my Palomino, and before I'd discovered Parelli Natural Horsemanship. As soon as everyone started trotting my Golden boy just bucked on the spot over and over again. I got off and went home in tears.

So fast forward my 8 years studying Parelli part time, all the DVDs ever available, the savvy club, two Colorado Campus courses, one riding clinic with Linda in Australia, and last summer I completed the Level 4+ Riding with Ryan Pfouts.

I'm still studying In Level 4 but the horsenality portions and the confidence programs for me were so valuable. I learnt that my Palomino is a high spirited LBI, and my second horse, who I bought 6 years ago was an Right Brain Introvert, and not so high spirited, and, as it turned out he is a much better fit for me for these dressage tests and ribbon days etc.

Garbo - the palomino taught me about patience, balance, and softness. Each and every one of Linda's videos with Remmer were so helpful to me, because it was like watching Garbo.

Without Garbo I would never have found Parelli late in 2007. He still makes me laugh everyday, and we have come along way, but we stick to trail rides and liberty now. I have had him since he was 7 and he's 18 now.

When I got Maraschino as a yearling, I was plunged into another big learning curve. A right brain world, asking softly, asking less, waiting. Around the same time Linda's DVDs with Hot Jazz, again, were so helpful. It was like watching Maraschino.

Needless to say I have taken a considerable amount of time in his foundation, he's now 8 years old, and today we went to our first show, and our first show alone. Without Garbo.

So rewind back a week with me sitting in a cafe having just booked myself into the show. This list immediately appeared in my head.... Separation training for Garbo, and sole trailer loading training for Maraschino. Garbo is super protective of his herd and he was much worse with Maraschino leaving his sight - but I was always able to take Garbo out on his own just fine.

I had 6 days. I kept hearing Linda and Pat saying "do it for the next 7 days". Eeek.
The butterflies hung around.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Day 1.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> The trailer. Nose neck maybe the feet day for sure. I got Maraschino into the float, no pooping, and off again without rushing, but not staying in for very long without backing off. That's ok. Garbo coped admirably in the yards out of sight of us, he called out about 30 times in 30 minutes. I took a time lapse video on my iPhone of him, and he didn't capriole, kick or rear, which I'd expected. I didn't have a Parelli friend to help so I had to improvise being on my own.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Day 2

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Nose neck and the feet easily today, but with me in the float with him. No pooping yay. Garbo called out about 15 to 20 times. Better. I was able to leave him in the float and back off myself, even walk around the front door and give him a treat. A few times.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Day 3 and 4.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I decided to trial Garbo being loose instead of in his yard - he ran around briefly as we disappeared out of site, but calmed quickly. I started moving Maraschino's rear end over, I have an angle load so he needed to go into the float, and then shift onto an angle. I was really happy with the progress and still no pooping. He was coming off quietly backwards and would come forward when I ask before backing right off. I managed to get the divider latched, and tack box closed, and leave the float, and come around to the personal access door before finishing for the day. It was super windy that day too.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Day 5

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">He was moving over well but not moving forward enough so I couldn't get the divider latched. I was able to latch it up finally, then put the tack box in, and the ramp up, and flap closed. All closed up. Garbo called out only three or four times. Pats words were ringing in my ears. Don't just close the trailer up as soon as they're in and drive off. So off he came, calmly in the wind. I was aware we'd need a little drive before the day but also conscious of taking a backwards step. I was one day short of my 7 days.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Day 6.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Short drive time. Once he was in the float, I unloaded him again, then loaded him one more time, and closed it all up and we drove to the local roundabout and back (about 12 minutes), and opened the door expecting to see poop but nothing! He wasn't sweating either. Great! My butterflies had calmed immensely knowing that this was going to be stress free. I'd left Garbo loose and much to my relief, there was no calling out when we went out of sight, and when we got back home he didn't even look up from the grass. Another thing I didn't need to get stressed out about. I decided to feed him in the trailer, he was totally ok until the neighbours started a weed-eater machine. He backed off and was hesitant about going on. In the end I took him closer to the noise so he could see what it was. Once he licked and chewed I loaded him again, unloaded and gave he the rest of his dinner next to the trailer, with the weed eater going strong.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

So back to today, 7am and I was ready, the trailer was packed, and I was feeling great. I haltered Maraschino and started grooming him. I'd been riding every morning this week as well, so it was just another morning for him. We loaded up, Garbo didn't even look up, and off we set, it was about a 20 minute drive away.

Maraschino was a bit high headed on arrival and calling out to all the other horses. I don't think he'd ever seen that many floats and trucks and horses all in one place. Each ring had 15 entrants. There were four rings. I was in Cautious rider. We immediately started doing figure 8s online, I know that always calms him down. After a few minutes he wasn't completely calm, like at home calm, but calm enough to eat some breakfast, in between whinnies.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Inhand was first.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In the ring, I wasn't nervous because I know I can handle ANYTHING on the ground, no matter what happens. I also knew that most people in that ring, never do much on the ground with their horse so I felt confident. Even if I dropped the rope I know he'd stay with me. I didn't expect to win anything, it would be a win for me just to have attended without drama. First was Best Combination. I was a bit blown away when we got 2nd. Then we won Best Gelding. The judge commented on how he moved so well. We got 3rd for Best Head, 4th for Obstacles (had to do a turn on forehand with horses front legs in a hula hoop) plus over a sack and trot poles. Then we also got placed in best handler, but what blew me away was how chilled Maraschino was becoming, apart from the odd call out, he was rapidly chilling. Well a feather could have knocked me down next because we were awarded the Champion ribbon. I was so proud of him. His calling out was becoming less and less. I let him graze in between our turns and he wasn't grabbing the grass in a rush which was good.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

We went and chilled together for lunch, just him and I, and chatted about the day, had water, and then saddled up for the riding section. I'd gone with the idea that I'd entered but wouldn't ride if Maraschino was not calm. He was quite chilled. And what happened next was amazing.

After worrying about the ride from the float to the ring (quite a long way with floats, horses, people, cars, gates, and much craziness) I got on with the idea that I'd get off if needed. My friend walked next to us for moral support, and he just turned into this incredibly calm brave horse and we walked all the way, then through the gate, then into the warm up area. Then we walked a few circles, then I asked him into trot. He was calm and focused. So was I !!!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I was super pleased and to be honest would have been more than happy to go home then with what we'd achieved. But I decided to go into the ring. We'd never trotted in a large group really so I kept wide and we got third for rider horse combination, then 2nd for best gelding, then 5th for trot poles. !!!

Paced and mannered class was next and I saw there was cantering. At this point I thought - you know, I'm tired, he's tired, he's done so well... We're going to quit now and go home. And that's what we did. It's not about the ribbons. It's about going home feeling successful with confidence intact, for both of us. Not only that but I bridled him the way I do at home by taking the halter off completely, and have him seek the bit - and he did it without hesitation at the show.

He loaded perfectly, and we drove home to find Garbo grazing. No running up to see us, he just looked up when Maraschino announced he was home "and you'll never guess where I've been!", Garbo called back to Maraschino to say welcome home and carried on grazing.

So - 10 years since I've been in a show and first one since starting Parelli, and such a super rewarding successful day on all counts. Preparation was the key, float training, separation training and in the saddle too. We'd practised transitions, riding in an open paddock, keeping rhythm, in trot, non emotional transitions, elbows by my side, and everything that I'd learned on my position.

Add to that, a year now of Pilates every week, and 10 years on we're in much better shape to be entering a ribbon day. Some would say that's very slow progress but thanks to Linda my confidence grows every time I ride now. It's a daily thing!

Thanks to Pat for the never ending sayings. All the way to the show today I repeated "your horse is only as brave as you are", and thanks to Ryan for any amazing two weeks in Colorado last August. That course was another confidence booster for me, but one thing I took away from that course and incorporated every time I ride was the session we had with Dr Jenny Susser. She said that if we rely on other people like instructors to always tell us how we are doing when we ride, we will never be able to move forward. We needed to learn to recognise our own mistakes, and then how to fix them. That was a real gem for me, and it's worked so well.

Feeling very grateful for Pat and Linda Parelli right now. Thanks. From all of us.

We started with theory - Supple Rein. I've seen Linda's video of this and tried it on Maraschino at home but not enough for it to be concrete. After today's theory session and then riding it for close to an hour, I really get it now. Totally!

It helps the horse become supple laterally.

Notes to remember;
A lazy figure eight pattern
Don't change diagonal on the change of direction.
A little flexion on a big pattern and bigger flexion in a smaller pattern.
Your hand is on the line with one rein.
Engage elbow
If rein touches neck - lift up not across, use elbow
Keep hand down unless you need to correct
Keep hand in line with hip not belly button
Horses job to take neck away from rein
Hold it and let the horse give to himself.

We're working towards moving through the stages of responses from
1. Fight, flight, ignore
2. And discomfort
3. Seeking comfort
4. Try as a partner

Reward mental effort.

My big takeaway for the day however was to keep my outside leg back on turns. My seat bone had been digging into my saddle on turns and it fixed it!!!!
Makes turns so much more pleasurable. !!

Then we did leg yield. I got confused about the direction of flexion compared to the direction were travelling until Ryan explained that we are yielding the horse from our left leg (going right) on left yield. riding Highland in the HoneycombThere are some benefits to being ready on time. Kari, Anne-Marie and I (the cream team) are usually the first to class, or our meeting spot, and always on time.

Well - it just so happened we were meeting at the honeycomb on Friday before lunch. Kari and I started riding over there and Linda and her riders were riding just head of us back to her barn. We followed along and she stopped at the honeycomb for a while and rode Highland in there. He reminded me of Maraschino so much.

Then the whole class except Kari and I went into town for the big launch of the new savvy club format. Where to start.

The morning started with some visuals of what we are aiming for as a picture or plan or goal from riding freely forward.

For the horses neck to be stretched forward, not with his head lower than his chest, that can be evasion or hiding.

We revised the riding posture from the feet up (building the foundation) and then added on the elbows and soft touch.

Then to add it all together and go riding right!!

We walked over to Pats arena on horseback and it gave me a chance to practise my leg position and engaging from the "thuttocks". It's something I am loving because it's making a big difference to my lower leg position and my knee.

Of course there's always time for a selfie. She needs more practice though. Handsome has got the photo bombing down though. Aptly named horse right.

Our riding session was focusing on our position, the horse riding freely forward, then follow the line. So keeping our nose and the horses nose on an imaginary line, and not losing rhythm as we turn (faster or slower). Horses tend to speed up trotting a turn and slow down walking a turn. So we needed to keep rhythm while making sure there were no floppy reins. Soft touch. We were not trying to put the horse in a frame just have a soft contact. Going up the slight incline I could really feel Dixie getting it! She doesn't love going downhill so much.

We rode back just as the rain started again. In the past I've been told to put my heels down, toes in, point my knee down to the ground, wrap my thighs around, etc etc. well today I figured out how to wrap my thighs! And not only that it also is the best way to bring your lower leg back under you.

Instead of pushing your lower leg back, you pull it with your glutes and behind the thigh. In time with the walk either side, and then both when you rise to the trot. It's amazing how it also makes your knee lower.

So there were three things we were working on. If the horse was taken from under you - would you still be standing n the ground or would you lose balance and fall over. Pulling your lower leg back behind the horse and under your hip. This action actually opens up the hip flexor. It's very very cool!

And lastly engaging your core and tucking your tail. I think there will be some sore muscles tomorrow!

Ryan also did a demo for us with Rembrant (so adorable) on warming up for responsiveness and connection. And that's it.

After that we all trail rode to Pats barn arena. We like his way of instructing a lot. Today we had a pretty cruisy day for the sake of the horses. Some were new and needed to settle.

We were working on balance simulations, then tried it out in the saddle. Like leaning more in one stirrup, leaning in the turn etc. just to see what the horse did. In the morning after some theory where we learnt about goals for your horses and you, we rode for an hour or two practising indirect and direct rein responsiveness. Getting the effort of phase four with phase one or less. We did sideways too.
So think sideways is phase 1/2.
By phase 1 she should be going sideways well.

Talked a lot about responsiveness and posture, as well as what we want the end picture to look like. Have a picture to have a plan. Get a feel.

After our afternoon class Kari and Ann-Marie and I went the long way back to the pens for a teeny trail ride. It was a nice relaxing day but with lots of information. Ryan said we're going to be riding a lot so this was a nice day for the horses.

No thunderstorm today so I had coconut icecream for dessert to cool me down. Rest day. It's rest day for Dixie and I, so it called for the fly mask since there are a lot of flies and the spray doesn't seem to be cutting it for her.

I had a mini sleep in till 6.30am and headed out to feed her after a shower. My lip is blistered which is a bit of a pain, I need to find some zinc today.

Fed Dixie, cleaned her stall, filled up her water and said goodbye to Deirdra who is heading back home with Pixie today. So there's only a few of us left. You can see Playboy next to Dixie, and Kari's horse Handsome, the palomino in the background too. The paint is leaving today too I think. Mandy was heading off on a 20 hour journey to Montana !!

Few errands today, a bit of work catch up and just some relax time before I head back this evening to take Dixie for a walk/graze and feeding plus clean out her pen again

Think I'll wait till it's a bit cooler...not sure when that will be!

My apartment is nice and cool with the windows open today though - they have flyscreens so I can open all of them up and get a lovely cool breeze. I'm going to try not to use the air conditioning anymore because between that and the dry mountain air here, and the dust from the arenas, my nose is drying up inside.

Location:Parelli Ranch, Pagosa Colorado
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03563096331320166998noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4183559093090694199.post-34472242976228560842015-08-22T13:50:00.001+12:002015-08-22T13:53:16.513+12:00Knowledge board from this week At the end of our last riding session today we did this.

Location:Parelli Ranch
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03563096331320166998noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4183559093090694199.post-11738946131416097342015-08-22T13:20:00.001+12:002015-08-22T13:21:52.234+12:00Last day Level 3 Freestyle at the Parelli RanchFriday already. Gosh how time flies. Some of the class are leaving today and some staying for the next two weeks. It's been a great group.

So the morning warmup consisted of us and the other course in a "don't drop the ball" volleyball type thing in a circle - fastest to 30 passes without dropping the ball. Think we won one of them out of three.

We revised what we did yesterday and then looked at the cloverleaf and question box pattern. I've never really been able to ride the cloverleaf very consistently because most arenas I got to have lots of jumps set up in them. We learnt why we do each pattern. I think Maraschino will like both. Maybe Garbo too actually. Maybe not the cloverleaf lol.

I've never done question box but I really like it now.

Anyway out we went to try it out.

First we started with question box and we ended up trotting happily around the playground which was nice.

Then we had a rest on the bridge. Lesson learned? Save an offline copy! Here goes take 2.

It was 8 degrees driving to the ranch at 7am and 29 degrees on the way back at 6pm. Those are the variances. It doesn't stay cold for long once the sun is high.

So more team building with moving planks of wood on our feet as a team, today a figure 8 around the hitching rails from the lodge driveway. For those of you not familiar with the ranch that is a long way! We're over this particular team exercise now lol. Yes, we lost. 😝

So after some revision in the class on bow ties, we headed out to the playground again.
Again for those who have not been here, here is the walk from near where the horse pens are to nearly inside the playground - thanks Dixie.

YouTube Video

We started with follow the rail around this corral.
It's huge to say the least, some rode inside, I rode outside with others. I started on the uphill part of the circle and I guess we did 3/4 of the outside before we trotted again, both directions. At trot we were high fiving the riders in the inside going the opposite direction but we refrained from that in canter for today lol. This along with having not cantered Dixie before was huge for me. I haven't cantered really much at all since 2011, different saddle and bouncy warmblood combo, I lost my seat security but we've been working a lot on balance and core strength this year.

We had to grade our own balance at the beginning of the course. I said 10.

Then we did some up and down work down into the empty pond, up the hill and over the smaller side of this jump, and off the edge again.

Then - point to point from cone to cone if you look closely, over two logs. I'm starting to get the feel of Dixie's trot now. She can get a bit rushed. But she's super good with stop and go on the lightest phase.

After lunch we introduced the carrot stick and it's phases. So all afternoon we rode (most of us) without using our reins. Indirect rein turns, direct rein turns, and stopping on the rail by turning towards it. Then we did bow tie patterns to get leads changes (with reins).

One of the instructors said I was kicking, but I wasn't so I suspect in the turns my heels are coming up a bit again. One was delayed once we had boarded, so we sat in the plane at the gate for 45 minutes. Blah.

Check in was on Sunday which I was late for, but made the last half of orientation. Just as well I'd been to Parelli ranch before really. We have to take the horses temperatures every day and check for signs of VS, but all good so far.

Went to meet my horse and she's kind of like a milder version of Garbo. Lol.

She loves treats and grazing so those things have been our relationship builder. Every time I go see her I give her a piece of carrot. Now she's starting to look for me rather than just in the general direction of the feed container.

Day 1 started at 8.30am and we did some names games. Amazing how that helps. Then we revised the basics. If you have the basics good you have a good basis right. Lateral Flexion, indirect rein, 9 step back up, then we practised an active halt on the seat builders - as opposed to just flopping as you quit riding.

We went over the 8 responsibilities of the human and horse. Then we revised savvy saddling and savvy bridling. We saddled up before lunch just for practise then had lunch, well I had mine in the car as I realised I'd forgotten my helmet so needed to go collect it.

After lunch saddled up again and warmed our horses up. We'd played a little in the morning as well but Dixie was a little head high in canter, but she offered loads. Over jumps, down off the big jumps, on top of the seesaw and over, over the bridge.

Then we revised safe mounting and dismounting and checking for lateral flexion once in saddle, then disengaging the HQ. We had a brief ride, of which this was the first for me and Dixie. She was fairly LB and very responsive. Her sideways is like gliding.

Next day (today) we did the same thing after reviewing rising on the correct diagonal, and the beats per gait etc. Today riding we did walk trot transitions to get the phases light and then follow the rail at trot for a whole song. More transitions and then we did big figures of 8s to change the diagonal. Dixie found my double bounce too bouncy and went into canter so I needed to soften my bounce. I'm slowly getting used to her trot.

On the ground we practiced the phases for carrot stick riding from zone 3 online.

Happy Dixie grazing.

We are riding in Pats large round pen and playing in his playground.
This means our horses get to see all sorts of comings and goings like horses dragging metal cows on wheels.
We warmed them both up and then got on. I actually warm Garbo up at liberty most of the time because he loves it so much. Today he went sideways over a jump stand lying flat on the ground (one of those big plastic square ones that loo like part of a jigsaw puzzle).

We rode around the track twice. Garbo normally hates that because "it's boring Mum" but we told him it was his job to show maraschino the ropes and he was really good. Maraschino had a wee trot away up the hill part of the track and Garbo was like "yeah, nah".

Then we headed out into the private road, past the three neighbours, one with barking dogs and turned left into the paper road which borders the length of our neighbours property and ours.
At the end is a field of maize. I think they would have liked to just keep going in actual fact - had we let them I think they would have trail blazed throughout he maize.

On the way back Maraschino went ahead on hs own - brave boy - and Garbo didn't get bothered either.
When we got back to the top of the paper road they wanted to go left further down the paper road - rather than down the private road back home... but it was a tad stony so we left it there and headed back to Coco.

Garbo trying to put on Maraschino's bridle too.

We warmed up online and there was nothing untoward. I got on in the arena and there was a horse there being tormented by a girl - the horse was terrified - goodness knows how they got it in the trailer to get the horse there but it took her a good 30 minutes to be able to get on - and Maraschino (not Garbo unusually) got quite upset about the fact that the lady was using her whip to make the horse stand still - without success I might add. Then she proceeded to attempt to risk life and limb and ride this terrified tip toeing horse around the track.

Anyway - Garbo didn't seem phased and we managed to trot with no drama so after 15 minutes or so we rode in the track - again with no drama. I checked in with him alot to see what he was thinking but I was worrying over nothing he was as good as gold.

Maraschino's slightly worried look.

The scared horse finally got back to the float but of course it took a long while to load him - in the end they backed the float up to the stable door and loaded him from there somehow. He was trying to kick his way out of the float as they drove away. Maraschino was very pleased to see the end of that lady with all the angry energy. He was still really good and although he spooked a couple of times in the track he only jumped slightly and then went forward and stopped.

2nd ride in a bridle - pretty impressed of calm he was.
Garbo was my Garbo again rather than the caprioling stunt horse from last week. Phew.

Ride 1 - bit, on track, out, relaxed rein, with Maraschino

Ride 2 - from home down paper road, in hackamore, no bit, on his own, loose rein

so - as you can see - nothing was in common with each other to cause it.

Ride 1, I was totally relaxed. Totally came out of nowhere and was fine again seconds later as if it never happened.

Ride 2 not as much. ;-) Neither was he.

On the paper road he did it 3 times then I got off.

I asked my friend to ride him two days later and she's a really good rider. He did it to her too and she said it was a spook - just a high spirited one lol. So she rode him really forward and half halted him - slight partial disengagement when she could tell he was thinking up things to do. He went really well after that.

Only thing I have changed is his chaff so I am going to cut that out from tomorrow.

Hopefully that helps.
I've ridden him in the round pen and in a couple of arenas. Tori rode him on a trail around Waimarie, and Michelle's ridden him on the track at Crescent. So today was the day. My fiend suggested I ride him from the round pen back to the barn. So that was my plan.

Yesterday we did some yo yo between the pedastal and the jump stands, and today when I asked him to do the same he offered to get up on the pedestal. Happy about that.

In this photo he was chewing on something and I had a look and it was a piece of rubber from the arena...he spat it out. Funny thing.

We did a little trot to make sure he wasn't emotional and then I got on.

We've been working on the mounting process. He'd been moving off which we have fixed, but now when I hold his mane to mount he lifts his head up. Yesterday I did lots of up and down until he relaxed, then I got on, then I got off. :-) today he was really good at standing and the head lifting is getting better.

We did follow the rail, and don't come off the rail today. Then a little trot a couple of times, and then we practiced mounting again because I needed to open the bungee....didn't want to try out doing it while on board with Maraschino just yet. I can do it with Garbo just fine. Then I got back on and focused on heading back to the barn.

I had been playing Jewel on my speakers and at the end of the songs was applause. He looked up there after each song while we were playing and riding. So heading back to the barn wasn't as enticing as it normally is lol. He was drawn to the left to see Garbo so I turn him back to the round pen as a retreat then headed back to the barn again. We got half way before he hesitated so I got off there. Pretty happy with that.
